Canada Greener Homes Grant - What you need to know

Energy rebates and energy grants are a helpful way to encourage homeowners to improve their homes. When your home is more energy-efficient, it simply means you will use less energy, and spent less on utility bills. This is both beneficial to our pockets, and the environment. Unfortunately, however, the rebate system is designed in a way that you must get a home energy advisor to audit your home first, then proceed with the upgrades in order to qualify for the rebates and grants.
Canada Greener Homes Grant
The current Grant used in Ontario is the Canada Greener Home Grant. This grant provides funds for home evaluations and retrofits for a total of $5,600. Homeowners can get up to $600 total for the cost of the pre and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation (to help with the home energy advisor audit), and up to $5,000 total for the implementation of eligible retrofits. There are, however, a few changes compared to the last offered grants and rebates that homeowners need to be aware of.
Eligible Retrofits:
Home insulation
Windows
Doors
Air Sealing
Solar Panels / Renewable Energy Systems
Roofing / Roofing Membrane
Waterproofing / Resiliency Measures
Ground Source Heat pumps
Specific Water Heater Equipment
Smart Thermostat Upgrades
This time around, there are the products that do not qualify and are ineligible for the current Greener Home Energy Grant:
Retrofits that were done before a pre-retrofit evaluation (one of the most common problems!)
Retrofits that were done before December 1, 2020
Leased or rented equipment
Furnaces (unless you live in a northern or off-grid community)
Air conditioners
Tankless or gas storage water heaters
Skylights
Boilers (unless you live in a northern or off-grid community)
Roofs
How To Apply For The Canada Greener Homes Grant
Like all government grant and rebate programs, specific steps must be taken to receive the grant. First and foremost, follow the guide directly by clicking here. This 5-step process starts with checking if you are eligible to receive the grant as some homeowners (for example, landlords that live off-premises) are not eligible. The second step would be to register and book your pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation.
Once the evaluation has been done, and you have received your energy advisor report it’s time to proceed with at least one retrofit that is both eligible and recommended.

Utility bills will cost less because an efficent home uses less energy, and retains it for longer.
Better for the environment
By using less energy we have a smaller footprint on the use of emissions and other substances. This helps fight against climate change.
