Air quality is important for seniors and retired people
WHO guidelines on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) specifically underline the elderly, as well as those who spend time within care homes, as disproportionately at risk of indoor air pollution. Poor IAQ is particularly important to consider because the majority of people spend 90% of their time indoors, and elderly people living in a care home spend even more.

Breathing and respiratory health
A study has shown that levels of air pollutants commonly found within indoor care home environments, such as NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) and PM (particulate matter), have significant impacts on an individual’s health, particularly in elderly people (measured as 65+). This same study found elevated levels of PM10 and NO2 to be strongly correlated to breathlessness and cough (particularly for those aged over 80 years old), while high PM0.1 concentration exposure was ‘associated’ with ‘wheeze’ within the past 12 months.

Air pollution’s harmful effects include exacerbated memory loss and reduced general cognitive function. The contamination of the air with pollutants such as NO2 and PM10 has also been found to steepen the decline in memory that comes with age. As individuals grow older, their memory declines, so much so that those aged over 80, on average, remember three and a half fewer words when compared to a 21-year-old. Thus, it is important that every attempt is made by the elderly to avoid environments in which memory is likely to become further deteriorated.

Why care homes often have low indoor air quality
The air in a care home has been found to change very few times an hour: one study measured 0.2 to 2 air changes per hour in care home bedrooms, and 0.7 to 2 in living rooms. The fewer the air changes, the longer pollutants stay in the air. Regular disinfection is part of care home life too, and disinfectant products have been widely associated with poorer indoor air quality.
