How catalytic carbon removes chlorine and chloramines

The use of chloramines and chlorine to disinfect water by municipal water treatment plants makes the water safe to come to our tap. However, the use of these disinfectants leads to taste and odor issues. Not only that, chloramines must be removed from water used in the production of soft drinks and fisheries, but they are still readily in our tap water.

The TOCC system uses a special catalytically enhanced carbon media that efficiently removes the chlorine and chloramines from the water. Regular granular activated carbon media has less catalytic activity, so it only partially removes chloramines from the water. In controlled laboratory testing, evidence shows that the TOCC system provides high chloramine removal capacity with the special media filter used in our products.

Chlorine in city water

Why remove chlorine from your tap water?

What comes to mind when you think of the word chlorine? Swimming pools? Disinfectants such as bleach? Water treatment? Environmental concerns?

Modern-day society relies on city and municipal water treatment facilities: without them, the water in our taps would be full of harmful organic materials such as bacteria. Once the water arrives safely at your home, the disinfectant has done its job, and there is no further need for it in the water you drink, cook, and shower with.

Homes in London rely on municipal water that meets safety standards, but the chlorine used to treat it can affect odor and flavor. Homeowners may notice it in everyday use:

  • A chemical or swimming-pool-like taste in tap water
  • An odor at sinks and showers
  • A strong smell when you run hot water

Chlorine byproducts in the news

Chlorine keeps city water safe on its way to your home. Reporters and researchers have also looked at the byproducts it forms.

  • Trihalomethanes (THMs) in tap water

Chlorine has protected our drinking water for a century. But its byproducts may be tainting it. Trihalomethanes, or THMs, form when chlorine reacts with organic matter in the water, and avoiding exposure isn’t as simple as drinking bottled water. Read more about this in the Global News articles “Tainted Water.”

  • New chlorine byproducts identified

A study from Johns Hopkins looked at the most common water treatment found in tap water. Researchers identified new byproducts that are produced when chlorine is added to regular drinking water. These findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Questions

Chlorine & chloramine filter FAQ

What is the difference between chlorine and chloramine?

Both are disinfectants used in municipal water treatment to control bacteria as water travels to homes. Chlorine acts quickly, can dissipate faster once water enters the home, and is often responsible for strong taste or odor. Chloramine, a compound formed by combining chlorine with ammonia, is more chemically stable, remains in water longer throughout distribution systems, and is more difficult to reduce without specialized filtration media. More in our guide to chlorine and chloramine in tap water.

Does a regular carbon filter remove chloramine?

Not fully. Regular granular activated carbon media has less catalytic activity, so it only partially removes chloramines from the water. The TOCC system uses a special catalytically enhanced carbon media that efficiently removes chlorine and chloramines, and in controlled laboratory testing it showed high chloramine removal capacity.

Do I need a whole-house chlorine filter on city water?

City water is disinfected so it arrives safely at your home. Once it is there, the disinfectant has done its job, but it stays in the water as taste and odor. A whole-home filter removes chlorine and chloramines at the point of entry, which improves the water for drinking, bathing, cleaning, laundry, and everyday household use, not only at the kitchen tap.

Does the free water test check for chlorine?

Yes. The free in-home water test checks chlorine and taste, along with hardness (calcium and magnesium), total dissolved solids, and staining and scale. It takes about 30 minutes for most homes, including the time we spend going through the results with you.

How much does a whole-home chlorine filter cost?

It depends on your water and on the house. How much chlorine or chloramine your water carries, how much water your household uses, and whether a water softener or a drinking water system goes in with it all change what fits. That is what the free in-home water test is for, and it costs nothing.

Do you install chlorine filters in London, Ontario?

Yes. Our team installs whole-home water filtration in London and across Southwestern Ontario, and our technicians service it too.
