Heat Pumps in London, Ontario
A heat pump heats and cools your home from one outdoor unit. It can run all-electric with an indoor air handler, or pair with a gas furnace that takes over in extreme cold: what York calls a hybrid system. Platinum Air Care installs, repairs, and services heat pumps across London and Southwestern Ontario.

Two ways to set it up
Heat Pump on Its Own, or Paired With Your Furnace
A heat pump is an air conditioner that also runs in reverse, so it heats and cools your home on its own. In the colder months it pulls heat from the outdoor air and moves it inside, using electricity to move heat instead of burning fuel to make it. Which setup suits you depends on your home, your ducts, and whether you have a gas furnace.

Setup 1 All-electric
Heat Pump With an Air Handler
The heat pump does the heating and cooling, with an air handler indoors: the unit that moves air through your ducts. The whole system runs on electricity.
- Summer: it cools. It removes heat and humidity from your home, like a central air conditioner.
- Colder months: it heats. It moves heat from the outdoor air inside.
- Coldest days: back-up heat. An electric heater in the air handler tops up the heat pump.
Setup 2 Hybrid, or dual fuel
Heat Pump With a Gas Furnace
York calls this a hybrid system. Its HH8 heat pump can be paired with an existing gas furnace, York or not, and its YH5 and YH6 pair with York furnaces.
- Summer: it cools. The heat pump cools your home, like a central air conditioner.
- Colder months: it heats. The heat pump can be your main source of heat, so the furnace runs less and burns less gas.
- Extreme cold: the furnace takes over. Your gas furnace is the back-up heat source for the coldest days.
Is your furnace due, too? A new York furnace and a heat pump can go in as one system: see the York TM9V two-stage furnace, the York TM9E single-stage furnace, the York YP9C modulating furnace, or furnace replacement.
The York heat pump line
York Heat Pumps, Two-Stage to Variable Speed
We install York heat pumps. Here are four of York’s current models, two two-stage and two variable-speed. All four use R-454B, the newer refrigerant with a lower global warming potential, and each one can run with a York air handler or pair with a gas furnace as a hybrid system.
Two-stage
Low, high, and off, instead of a simple on and off.

- More than half of its ENERGY STAR-listed systems are cold-climate
York YH9
Communicating variable-speed heat pump
- Up to 21 SEER2
- Up to 9.5 HSPF2
- ENERGY STAR
- Cold-climate
- Inverter-driven, fully variable compressor
- Works with a communicating or a conventional thermostat
- Every ENERGY STAR-listed system is cold-climate: at -15°C (5°F) it still delivers about twice the heat it uses in electricity
- Pairs with a gas furnace as a hybrid system
SEER2 rates cooling efficiency and HSPF2 heating efficiency. The ratings and the ENERGY STAR listing are for each outdoor unit with matched indoor units. The figures are the highest the ENERGY STAR directory lists for each model (the YH9’s are York’s own figures), and every model here is listed for Canada as well as the United States.
Which one suits your home? It depends on your house, your ducts, and whether you have a gas furnace. Only need cooling? See York’s YC3 single-stage, YC6 two-stage, and YXV variable-capacity air conditioners. Furnaces and the rest of the line are on the York lineup page.

Why Choose Platinum Air Care for Heat Pump Installation and Repair
Platinum Air Care has served homes across London and Southwestern Ontario since 1999. A heat pump is only as good as the way it goes in, whether it heats your home on its own or works with a gas furnace in a hybrid system.
- One system, sized right. We size the heat pump to your home and your ducts, and to your furnace in a hybrid system, not just match it to the old unit’s label.
- The ducts and the air, too. Because we are an indoor air company as well, we look at the airflow and ducts, not just the box in the basement, and can add whole-home air purification to the same system.
- Installed right. Your heat pump is installed by licensed HVAC technicians.
- A warranty we back up. When your system is purchased and installed by Platinum Air Care, we don’t just offer the manufacturer warranty, we back it up.
- Heat pump repair, too. We repair and service most makes of heat pump, furnace, and air conditioner, and emergency service is available: furnace repair, AC repair.

Questions
Heat Pump FAQ
What homeowners in London and Southwestern Ontario ask about heat pumps, from adding one to having one fixed.
How does a heat pump work with a furnace in an Ontario winter?
When a heat pump is paired with a gas furnace, in what York calls a hybrid system, the heat pump can be your main source of heat in the colder months: it pulls heat from the outdoor air and moves it inside. In extreme cold, the furnace takes over as the back-up heat source, and the less the furnace runs through the winter, the less gas it burns. In summer, the same heat pump cools your home like a central air conditioner.
Will a heat pump replace my furnace?
It can: an all-electric heat pump with an air handler needs no furnace. A home with a gas furnace can also keep it as the back-up, in a hybrid system. Which suits your house is part of the quote.
Can I add a heat pump to the furnace I have now?
York says its HH8 heat pump can be paired with an existing gas furnace, York or not, and its YH5 and YH6 are built to pair with York furnaces. Whether your furnace and ducts suit a heat pump is part of the quote. If the furnace is near the end of its life, a new York furnace and a heat pump can go in together: see the York TM9V and the York YP9C.
What decides the size of a heat pump?
Heat pumps are sized in tons. York builds the YH5 and YH6 from 1.5 to 5 tons and the HH8 in 2, 3, and 4-to-5-ton sizes. The right size depends on your house and your ducts, not on the label of the unit you have now, and that is what the free quote is for.
Do York heat pumps work in a Canadian winter?
ENERGY STAR lists all four York models on this page for Canada as well as the United States. It lists every York YH9 system, and more than half of the HH8 systems, as cold-climate: at -15°C (5°F) they still deliver about twice the heat they use in electricity. York matches the two-stage YH5 and YH6 with its air handlers or its gas furnaces; in a hybrid system, the furnace is the back-up in extreme cold.
What warranty comes with a York heat pump?
York’s own manual gives the two-stage YH5 and YH6 a 10-year compressor limited warranty, and 10 years on parts when the heat pump is registered online within 90 days of installation (5 years if it isn’t). For the HH8 and YH9, York lists up to 10 years on parts and compressor, also with online registration within 90 days. Ask us and we’ll help you register it. When your system is purchased and installed by Platinum Air Care, we don’t just offer the manufacturer warranty, we back it up.

Yes. We repair and service most makes of heat pump, not only the ones we install, across London and Southwestern Ontario. If yours has stopped heating or cooling, call (519) 686-3595: emergency service is available.
How much does a heat pump cost?
It depends on the equipment and on the house: the model, the size your home needs, your ductwork, whether it runs all-electric or with a gas furnace, and what the install involves. That is what the quote is for, and it costs nothing.
Do you install and repair heat pumps outside London?
