What Is an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV)?

An energy recovery ventilator delivers clean, fresh outdoor air to every room in your house. Since January 1, 2017, the Ontario Building Code has required every newly built home in Ontario to have an HRV or ERV system installed. This is important because it shows how tightly sealed our homes are, and a tightly sealed home holds on to its stale air.

Little Things Mean a Lot

The Platinum ERV moves the stale air out, and what is in that air goes with it:

  • Pet dander, and odors from pets, cooking, and bathrooms

Once or twice a year, remove the core and filters from the unit and vacuum them clean. Vacuum any dust from the unit and check the weather hoods for leaves and other debris, or just have a Platinum Air Care service technician do it for you.

Platinum ERV System FAQ

Will it work in any kind of home?

The Platinum ERV works with all central air heating and cooling systems, provided that your home has adequate space available to bring in fresh air.

There is a smoker in my home. Will the Platinum ERV help with the smoke?

The Platinum ERV can help with this, but that is not its main job. The main purpose of the Platinum ERV is to rotate fresh air inside and stale air outside in a high-efficiency manner while maintaining humidity levels. If you have issues with pollution such as smoking, dust, pet dander, and similar, combine the Platinum ERV with our Platinum TrueHEPA and Platinum PURE for excellent results.

Will it affect the performance of my air distribution system?

No. The Platinum ERV is self-powered and is installed in the HVAC system in a bypass configuration.

I have an older home. Do I still need this?

Most older homes have had multiple renovations over the years, such as finishing a basement, getting a new roof, or replacing the old windows. All of these things can make your home more airtight, which is why Platinum Air Care recommends installing an ERV ventilation system.

Does it have to run continuously to keep the air fresh?

In short: no. The most popular setting is the 20/40 run mode, meaning that for every 60 minutes (1 hour), your Platinum ERV system, like other air exchangers such as HRV units, will run for 20 minutes at a time. The Platinum ERV also has settings for longer run times and timer options, allowing it to meet every family’s individual needs.

How much maintenance is needed?

We recommend checking the unit once a year and vacuuming out the filter. However, homes without any type of air filtration may be advised to check and clean more frequently (such as two or three times a year) to make sure airflow is efficient. Platinum Air Care’s certified technicians also have options to include ERV/HRV check-ups and inspections with their service work, ensuring your equipment is working as needed, when needed.

Why did Ontario make HRV/ERV a requirement in every new home?

Our modern homes are built with efficiency standards in mind: tightly sealed homes that retain your heating and cooling better than years before. However, this means that the homes are also more airtight than ever before. Airtight homes are a significant reason why the EPA reports higher concentrations of some pollutants indoors than outdoors, and why people notice a significant difference in air quality after using our products.
