Water Quality in Barrie, Ontario
Barrie's municipal water comes from two sources, according to the City of Barrie: groundwater from a deep aquifer, pumped by municipal wells, and Lake Simcoe water drawn through an intake in Kempenfelt Bay and treated at the City's Surface Water Treatment Plant.
The two are treated differently. At the Surface Water Treatment Plant, the lake water passes through membrane filtration, then granular activated carbon for taste and odor. The well water carries naturally occurring iron and manganese, which the City keeps in suspension with sodium silicate to help prevent rusty-looking water at the tap. Across Barrie's range of housing, from century homes near the downtown core to newer builds in Ardagh, Painswick, and Holly, those supply characteristics affect how water behaves in each property.
Is Barrie’s tap water hard?
It depends on where you live. The north and central parts of Barrie are mainly served by the municipal wells, and the south end mainly by the lake water from the Surface Water Treatment Plant. The well water is the harder of the two, and the City’s Water Supply Zones map shows which source serves an address.

Is Barrie’s water chlorinated or chloraminated?
Chlorinated. The City of Barrie disinfects with chlorine gas at its treatment plant and its wells, and keeps a chlorine residual through the pipes. It adds chlorine usually between 0.50 and 1.0 parts per million, and says people sensitive to the taste may notice it more in the morning, after water has sat in the pipes overnight.
