Hard water & chlorine
Water Quality in London, Ontario

Is London’s tap water hard?
Moderately hard to hard. London’s tap water is treated water from Lake Huron and Lake Erie, supplied through the regional Lake Huron and Elgin Area water systems. Average hardness by source:

- 141 mg/L Lake Erie water, about 8 grains per gallon
Hardness as calcium carbonate: 2021 to 2025 averages from Huron Erie Water, the regional utility that runs both systems. The City of London’s 2025 Drinking Water Summary Report measured 110 to 126 mg/L in the city’s own system.
Is London’s water chlorinated or chloraminated?
Chlorinated. The City’s 2025 report lists liquid chlorine and sodium hypochlorite among its treatment chemicals, and no ammonia. Its chlorine readings that year, from 3,186 grab samples and continuous monitors at 10 locations, ranged from 0.23 to 1.19 mg/L.

Private wells around London
Testing private well water for bacteria is free through the London Public Health Laboratory. The Middlesex-London Health Unit hands out sample bottles at 17 pick-up locations in London and Middlesex County and receives about 1,900 samples a year.
