Water Quality in Cambridge, Ontario
Cambridge's municipal water is supplied by the Region of Waterloo, primarily from groundwater sources with a portion drawn from the Grand River. The Region of Waterloo's water hardness map puts Cambridge at 20 to 36 grains per gallon, depending on the street (about 340 to 615 mg/L as calcium carbonate), classified as very hard. That hardness level influences how soap and detergents perform, how minerals build up on fixtures, and which filtration or softening options best fit a home.
Is Cambridge’s tap water hard?
Very hard. Cambridge’s tap water is Region of Waterloo groundwater from well systems in the city, and in 2025 the City’s pipes delivered it to about 138,500 people through 44,729 service connections.

Is Cambridge’s water chlorinated or chloraminated?
Both, depending on the area. Every Regional well system in Cambridge uses chlorine, with UV light added at the Middleton, Shades Mill, and G4 supplies. Parts of Cambridge are also in the Region’s Mannheim service area, and at the Mannheim plant ammonium sulfate turns the chlorine into chloramine. The City’s 2025 report found both forms in its pipes: free chlorine of 0.01 to 1.52 mg/L and combined chlorine of 0.03 to 1.62 mg/L, across 832 samples.
