Water Quality in Kitchener, Ontario
Kitchener's municipal water is supplied by the Region of Waterloo from a combination of groundwater wells and the Grand River. The Region's 2025 Annual Water Quality Report lists four well supplies for Kitchener (Greenbrook, Strange Street, Parkway, and K34), and on the Region's hardness map every part of the city is very hard. Hardness at that level influences how soap and detergents perform, how minerals build up on fixtures, and which filtration or softening options best fit a home.
Is Kitchener’s tap water hard?
Very hard, and it varies by area. The Region of Waterloo explains why: most of its drinking water comes from groundwater wells, and groundwater picks up minerals as it travels underground. Kitchener Utilities puts the city’s own supply at about 80 percent groundwater.

Is Kitchener’s water chlorinated or chloraminated?
Chloraminated. At the Mannheim plant, which treats Grand River water for Kitchener, the Region of Waterloo adds ammonium sulfate to convert free chlorine to chloramine, which its 2025 report calls a more stable disinfectant for the pipes. The Region adds it at all four of Kitchener’s well supplies too.

Kitchener Utilities says naturally occurring iron and manganese can get stirred up in the water mains and discolor tap water, and that some of that discoloration can stay on a water softener’s resin or in a hot water tank.
