Hard water & chlorine

Water Quality in Aylmer, Ontario

Is Aylmer’s tap water hard?

Hard on the 2021 to 2025 average. Aylmer’s tap water is Lake Erie water from the Elgin Water Treatment Plant, carried through the Elgin Area Primary Water Supply System and the Aylmer Secondary System’s main along Highway 3. The Town’s own water mains, about 44 kilometers of them, then carry it to the Town’s 3,215 metered water customers.

  • 141 mg/L the Elgin Area system’s 2021 to 2025 average, about 8 grains per gallon
  • 116 mg/L the Elgin Area system’s one test in 2025, about 7 grains per gallon

Source: the Town of Aylmer’s 2024 Distribution System Annual Report names the Elgin Area system, and its 2026 Water and Wastewater Rate Study gives the water main and customer figures; hardness from Huron Erie Water, the regional utility that runs it, and its 2025 fourth-quarter water quality report.

Is Aylmer’s water chlorinated or chloraminated?

Chlorinated. The Elgin Area plant disinfects the lake water with UV light and chlorine gas, chlorinating both before and after filtration, with no ammonia added. Water leaving the plant from October to December 2025 carried 0.92 to 1.47 mg/L of free chlorine.

How it shows up at home

  • White spots on dishes, scale on taps

Hard water minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, are left behind as limescale when water evaporates. The same scale builds up inside water heaters, dishwashers, and pipes.

  • A pool-like smell or chemical taste

Chlorine and chloramines. Municipal treatment plants use them to disinfect the water, and they leave taste and odor behind at your tap.

  • Dry skin and stiff laundry

Hard water minerals dry out skin and leave hair feeling rough or dull. In the wash, the same minerals leave clothes feeling stiff.
