Hard water & chlorine

Water Quality in St. Thomas, Ontario

Is St. Thomas’s tap water hard?

Hard. St. Thomas buys its water from the Elgin Area Primary Water Supply System, which treats Lake Erie water at a plant on the shore east of Port Stanley.

  • 141 mg/L Elgin Area (Lake Erie) water, about 8 grains per gallon: the 2021 to 2025 average

Source: the City of St. Thomas’s 2023 Water Distribution System Summary Report (the latest it has posted) names the Elgin Area system; hardness from Huron Erie Water, the regional utility that runs it.

Is St. Thomas’s water chlorinated or chloraminated?

Chlorinated, not chloraminated. St. Thomas water gets chlorine gas at the Elgin Area plant, alongside UV light, chlorine gas again at the Elgin Middlesex Pumping Station, and 12% sodium hypochlorite in the City’s own system, with no ammonia added at any stage. The City’s 635 free chlorine samples in 2025 ranged from 0.17 to 1.58 mg/L.

Well water treatment

How it shows up at home

  • White spots on dishes, scale on taps

Hard water minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, are left behind as limescale when water evaporates. The same scale builds up inside water heaters, dishwashers, and pipes.

  • A pool-like smell or chemical taste

Chlorine and chloramines. Municipal treatment plants use them to disinfect the water, and they leave taste and odor behind at your tap.

  • Dry skin and stiff laundry

Hard water minerals dry out skin and leave hair feeling rough or dull. In the wash, the same minerals leave clothes feeling stiff.
