Signs to look for

Hard Water, Chlorine Taste, and Other Common Water Problems

London’s municipal water meets safety standards, but minerals such as calcium and magnesium still contribute to hardness, and the chlorine used to treat it can affect odor and flavor. Here is how that shows up at home, and what treats it.

  • White spots on dishes, scale on taps

Hard water minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, are left behind as limescale when water evaporates. The same scale builds up inside water heaters, dishwashers, and pipes.

    The fix a water softener

  • Dry skin, dull hair, and stiff laundry

Hard water minerals dry out skin and leave hair feeling rough or dull, and chlorine can irritate sensitive skin and scalp. In the wash, the same minerals leave clothes feeling stiff.

The fix a water softener, with a chlorine filter

  • A pool-like smell or chemical taste

Chlorine and chloramines. Municipal treatment plants use them to disinfect the water, and they leave taste and odor behind at your tap.

The fix a whole-home chlorine filter

  • Cloudy or discolored water

Rust or sediment, which can cloud the water or turn it brown or yellow. It is common in both municipal and well water supplies.

  • Orange stains and a metallic taste

Iron, most common in well water and rural homes. It stains sinks, toilets, and laundry, and can give water a metallic taste or a reddish tint.

The fix CountrySoft, the conditioner with iron removal

  • Buying bottled water to drink

If the tap doesn’t taste right to you, purified water at the kitchen tap does the same job, with no bottles to buy, carry, or recycle.

Why filter your water

Why Water Filtration Is Essential for Your Home in Canada

Tap water isn’t always as clean or safe as it appears, even in Canada. Studies have found elevated levels of lead, chlorine, and harmful contaminants in residential water supplies. A customized home water filtration system can help remove these impurities and improve taste and smell, so fewer of them reach the water your family drinks and bathes in. Whether you need to reduce chlorine, hardness, iron, or sediment, our systems are designed to meet your specific needs.

A 2019 Global News investigation found lead above Health Canada’s guideline in drinking water across Canada, including in homes. Lead is one of the contaminants removed by the 7-stage drinking water station.

Questions

Water softener, filtration, and purification questions

Still have a question? Call (519) 686-3595

What is hard water?

Hard water contains high concentrations of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. In homes, this leads to limescale buildup in pipes, water heaters, dishwashers, and fixtures, reducing water flow, energy efficiency, and appliance lifespan. Common signs are soap scum on dishes and shower walls, white spots on glasses, dry skin and dull hair, and clothes that feel stiff after washing. A water softener removes those minerals at the source, which protects plumbing, improves detergent effectiveness, and extends the life of water-using appliances. More in our guide to hard water and your home.

What is the difference between a water softener and a water conditioner?

The two words are used loosely. A traditional water softener removes calcium and magnesium through ion exchange. Our CitySoft and CountrySoft conditioning systems do that too, and regenerate automatically to wash the hardness minerals down the drain. The CitySoft also reduces bad taste and odor caused by chlorine, and the CountrySoft adds iron removal for rural and well water. More in our guide to why not all water softening systems work the same way.

What is the Advanced 7-Stage Water Station?

A premium under-sink system that delivers clean, pH-balanced, alkaline drinking water directly to your tap. It uses advanced reverse osmosis and re-mineralizing alkaline filtration to remove chlorine, lead, heavy metals, VOCs, and other contaminants, while also enhancing taste and mineral balance. Coffee, tea, soups, and anything you cook taste better, fruits and vegetables get rinsed in filtered water, and there is no bottled water to buy. See the Advanced 7-Stage Water Station, or read how reverse osmosis works.

Why does my water have a strange taste, smell, or color?

It is usually one of these: chlorine, which creates a chemical or pool-like smell; sulfur (hydrogen sulfide), which causes a rotten egg smell; iron or manganese, which may give water a metallic taste or reddish tint; bacteria or algae, which can create musty or earthy smells; or rust or sediment, which may cloud the water or cause brown or yellow coloring. These issues are common in both municipal and well water supplies. Chlorine and iron are what our chlorine filter and CountrySoft conditioner are built to reduce. If you suspect bacterial contamination, contact your local municipality or water authority.

Can my water filter connect to my refrigerator, ice maker, or coffee machine?

Yes. The 7-stage drinking water station can be connected to your refrigerator, ice maker, or coffee machine. That means cleaner, better-tasting ice and chilled water, improved flavor in coffee, tea, and other drinks, and protection for the machines’ internal parts from scale and sediment.

How often should I replace my water filter?

It depends on the system and on your water. On the 7-stage drinking water station, we recommend replacing filters 1, 2, and 3 every 1 to 2 years on average, and filters 4 to 7 every 3 to 5 years, depending on usage. Homes with hard water, well water, or high sediment levels may need more frequent changes. On the water conditioner, the only upkeep is salt: check it now and then and add quality softener salt (only a few inches is needed), and the system regenerates on its own. For any other system, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations or contact our team for guidance. Order replacement filters from our Canada store, or book water system service.

Is my tap water safe to drink?

Tap water safety depends on your local water source and how it’s treated. Municipal water is regulated to meet safety standards, but it may still contain trace levels of chlorine, heavy metals, and microplastics by the time it reaches your faucet, and issues like aging pipes can affect water quality. A home water test shows what is in yours. Our free in-home test checks hardness, chlorine, total dissolved solids, and staining and scale. Filtering your tap water adds protection and peace of mind.

Is filtered tap water better than bottled water?

Filtered tap water is often cleaner, safer, and more affordable than bottled water. Bottled water can still contain microplastics, and in many cases it’s just repackaged municipal water. A home filtration system removes chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants at the source, gives you clean water on demand for drinking and cooking, and leaves no plastic bottles to buy, carry, or recycle.
